Today, I\u2019d like to explain why Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often goes unnoticed.

The core symptom of ASD is a difficulty in social reciprocity, which refers to the challenge of understanding others' thoughts and feelings. In simpler terms, it's the ability to infer what others are thinking.

When someone struggles with understanding the minds of others, it naturally leads to communication gaps and misinterpretations.

However, many individuals with ASD, through repeated experiences of failure in social interactions, develop coping mechanisms and learn certain patterns. As a result, they often stumble at the last moment, despite seeming to have grasped these patterns.

Particularly in adults diagnosed with ASD, their main complaints often revolve around non-specific symptoms, such as feeling fatigued, unwell, insomnia, palpitations, lack of motivation, or just an overall sense of malaise.

When healthcare providers focus solely on these complaints, ASD can be overlooked, and diagnoses such as depression, anxiety disorders, or panic disorders are often made. This leads to the prescription of medication aimed at treating those conditions.

However, when ASD is the underlying issue, antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications may have little to no effect on the symptoms, which are often linked to daily social struggles. In fact, the side effects of these medications may become more apparent than their benefits.

If medication is necessary, it might be more effective to focus on treating ADHD symptoms, which often co-occur with ASD. Addressing inattentiveness can lead to improvements in communication skills, task management, and a reduction in mistakes or conflicts at work. As these areas improve, the secondary symptoms may also show signs of improvement.

ASD and ADHD are developmental disorders, and are often missed by professionals outside of child psychiatry. This is because if the correct diagnosis isn't made, no one may notice. Developmental disorders, once a temporary trend in public awareness, seem to have faded into the background once again.

Misdiagnosis can be unhelpful, especially when it comes to understanding oneself. Mild forms of developmental disorders may go unnoticed by both the individual and others around them.

If previous treatments have been ineffective, it is crucial to assess whether developmental disorders like ASD have been properly evaluated.
