Today, I\u2019d like to talk about what to do if developmental concerns are pointed out during the 3-year-old health checkup.

At the 3-year-old checkup, a pediatrician will evaluate your child, and it\u2019s not uncommon for developmental delays to be flagged at this stage.

When I worked at Tokai University Hospital, child psychiatrists were dispatched to local 3-year-old checkups and conducted brief screenings on-site. However, this kind of approach is not yet common in Aichi Prefecture.

If your child is found to have a developmental delay at the age of 3, it is strongly recommended that you visit a child psychiatrist for a proper developmental assessment and consultation.

If no issues are found, that\u2019s great.

But if the psychiatrist finds something that requires monitoring, it\u2019s much easier to manage ongoing care if you already have a regular clinic or doctor familiar with your child.

In many cases, even if there are no major problems during preschool years, issues may emerge later\u2014around the time your child starts elementary or even junior high school\u2014depending on the nature of their symptoms.

The milder the symptoms, the more likely that problems will arise later, especially in group or social settings. However, by the time such issues become noticeable and you try to find a specialist, it may be very difficult and time-consuming to secure an appointment.

It can also take a long time to undergo psychological testing after the first visit.

That\u2019s why if you receive any indication of developmental concerns, it\u2019s a good idea to visit a child psychiatrist early on\u2014even just once\u2014for evaluation.
