Today, I\u2019d like to explain the treatment goals of play therapy in child psychiatry.

Play therapy is not simply \u201cplaying.\u201d It is a structured psychotherapeutic method that uses play as a medium for psychoanalytic intervention, similar to verbal therapy in adults. Interpretation and intervention are carried out throughout the therapeutic process.

Here are the main goals of play therapy:

1. Expression and Regulation of Emotions
Through play, children are encouraged to express emotions such as anger, anxiety, sadness, fear, and joy.
By having these feelings accepted and understood in the therapeutic space, children can become more aware of their emotions and learn how to organize and self-regulate them.

2. Alleviating Trauma and Anxiety
For children who have experienced trauma or chronic anxiety, symbolic reenactment through play can serve as a form of psychological catharsis.
By repeating these scenarios through pretend play or storytelling, children can regain a sense of safety and emotional control.

3. Development of Social Skills
Through interactions with the therapist\u2014or with other children in group play therapy\u2014children develop important interpersonal skills:
understanding social distance, sharing emotions, and learning rules and turn-taking.
This is especially important for children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) or ADHD, who often face difficulties in social communication.

4. Enhancing Self-Awareness and Self-Esteem
Play therapy provides an accepting and supportive environment where the child\u2019s natural expression is valued.
This fosters a sense of basic trust\u2014\"I am accepted as I am\"\u2014which promotes self-understanding, confidence, and self-esteem.

5. Supporting Development and Adaptive Behavior
For children with developmental delays or atypical development, play therapy naturally stimulates language, cognition, emotional growth, and social interaction.
It also provides opportunities for observation-based assessment, helping shape future support plans at home and in school settings.

A Note on the Nature of Play Therapy
Play therapy is often misunderstood as simple playtime, but it is a highly specialized psychological treatment that works deeply on a child\u2019s development and emotional world.

Parents often ask, \"What are you doing in that room?\"
But the answer is: only those inside the space can understand the process\u2014and that\u2019s how it should be.
If a parent were to join the session, it could disrupt the therapeutic process or halt progress altogether.

This doesn\u2019t apply only to play therapy.
All psychotherapy is meaningful precisely because of the shared experience within the confidential therapeutic space.

Whether it has an effect or not cannot be known without actually experiencing it.
Describing it fully in words beforehand is nearly impossible\u2014but something always happens, and something always begins to move within the child.
