今回は、就学後、授業中に座っていられない、授業が集中できない場合、について解説します。

 

もうすぐ新学期が始まります。入学したり、学年が上がったりすると、トラブルが発生することがよくあります。

 

低学年のうちは、授業中座っていられない、じっとできない、授業に集中できない、などよく相談があります。

 

これらはADHDの不注意症状の可能性がりますが、ADHDは年齢とともに改善していくこともあります。

 

しかし改善していく間に、授業がきけなければ、その間に獲得する知識量は圧倒的に少なくなります。

 

このあたりは正解はないと思いますが、機会損失の程度がどのくらいあるかも考えて治療をするか選択するべきです。

 

 

ADHD内服は即効性があり、飲んだその日から効果がでるものがあります。

 

不注意は生来の症状ですので、本人は生まれてからずっと不注意がある状態です。だから不注意がなんなのか、特に年齢が低いとよくわからないことが多いです。

 

不注意が改善した状況を治療を一時的に体感すれば、何が不注意で、生活のどの部分に支障がでていたのか、本人が自分で理解することができます。

 

治療はメリットがデメリットを上回り、そして自分で治療する意志がないと、あまり意味がありません。

 

精神科では特にそうかもしれません。

 

だからいったん治療をためしてあげて、継続するかは本人に決めてもらうようにしています。

 

治療は使いこなすことができれば、大人になってもそれを続けることもできるので、一つの武器になるでしょう。

When a Child Cannot Sit Still or Focus During Class After Starting School

Hello, I’m Dr. Koji Kato, child psychiatrist at Wako Clinic, a specialty pediatric psychiatric clinic in Chikusa Ward, Nagoya.

 

Today, I’d like to explain what to consider when a child cannot sit still or focus during class after entering school.

 

With the new school year just around the corner, it’s common to see various issues arise—especially when children start school for the first time or move up a grade.

 

In lower elementary grades, we often hear concerns such as:

 

“My child can’t stay seated during class.”

 

“They fidget constantly.”

 

“They have trouble concentrating on the lesson.”

 

These could be signs of inattentive symptoms related to ADHD. While some children do improve with age, if they are unable to focus during lessons in the meantime, they may miss out on a significant amount of learning opportunities.

 

There’s no absolute right or wrong answer here, but it’s important to consider the degree of this lost opportunity when deciding whether to start treatment.

 

ADHD Medications Can Work Immediately

Some ADHD medications have immediate effects, often working on the very first day they are taken.

 

Since inattentiveness is a lifelong symptom, children with ADHD have always lived with it—so especially at a young age, they often don’t realize what “inattention” actually is.

 

By briefly experiencing what it’s like without inattention through treatment, the child can begin to understand:

 

What “inattention” actually feels like

 

How it was affecting their daily life

 

Treatment Should Be a Choice

For psychiatric care in particular, treatment is only meaningful when the benefits outweigh the risks, and when the individual themselves is willing to engage with it.

 

That’s why at our clinic, we encourage trying treatment temporarily, and then let the child decide whether to continue based on how they feel.

 

If they learn how to manage their symptoms with treatment, it can become a valuable tool they carry with them into adulthood.
