４月に入学、学年があがる、などがあるので、５月ゴールデンウィークあけ頃になると、さまざまな相談が児童精神科にきます。
その中で勉強についていけない、というのも頻度が高いです。
勉強についていけない理由には、学校の中での環境的な要因によるものもありますが、ADHDがその根本的な原因となっていることがあります。
ADHDは、多動、衝動性の方が症状がはでなので目立ちますが、中核症状は不注意です。
不注意があると、単純に集中力が続かない、忘れっぽい、などがでますが、同時処理、並行作業が苦手というのが見えにくいですが、大きな影響を与えています。
例えば、いろんな感覚刺激がはいる集団での授業では、気もそれるし、黒板を書きながら、先生の話を聞く、みたいに同時に処理することが多いと、そのパフォーマンスが著しく下がってしまうことがあります。
静かな部屋で一人で勉強するなら大丈夫だが、集団の中だとパフォーマンスが発揮できないとなると、学校はほとんど集団です。
その状態で数年がたつと、能力が低くなかったとしても、現実的に知識が獲得できていないため、かなり勉強に遅れが生じてしまいます。
その時点でADHDと診断され治療がはじまったとしても、その遅れを取り戻すことが時間的に難しい、となることが多いです。
ですので、どちらにしても早く受診する方がいい、となります。
診断がつかないならつかないで、違う対処法を考えるきっかけにもなります。

Around May, after the Golden Week holiday, we often receive a wide variety of consultations in child psychiatry clinics. One of the most common concerns is:
“My child can’t keep up with their studies.”
While environmental factors within the school can certainly play a role, ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is sometimes the underlying cause.
■ ADHD and Academic Challenges
ADHD is often associated with hyperactivity or impulsivity, which are easy to notice.
However, the core symptom is actually inattention.
Inattentiveness can appear as:
Difficulty sustaining concentration
Frequent forgetfulness
Trouble following through on tasks
But what often goes unnoticed—and can be more impactful—is the difficulty with multitasking or simultaneous information processing.
■ Why school settings are especially challenging for children with ADHD
In a typical classroom:
There are many sensory distractions
Students are expected to listen to the teacher while copying from the board
They must process multiple instructions or sources of information simultaneously
For a child with ADHD, this kind of multi-layered processing environment can severely reduce their academic performance.
Even if the child is intelligent and capable, if they are placed in a group setting where they can’t perform at their best, they may fall behind academically over time.
■ Why early diagnosis and support are crucial
If years pass in such a setting without proper intervention, even a child with normal cognitive abilities may be left with major knowledge gaps simply due to lack of acquisition.
By the time ADHD is diagnosed and treatment begins, it can be extremely difficult to catch up on all that’s been missed.
That’s why early assessment and intervention are so important.
■ What if it’s not ADHD?
Even if ADHD is not diagnosed, the process of evaluation can help identify alternative causes and lead to new solutions for the learning difficulties.
